Today, OzSAGE, a diverse, multi-disciplinary network of Australian experts, releases its first preliminary advice paper and high-level recommendations for the safe opening of Australia to complement the National Plan. Among the recommendations is advice that Australia live with occasional outbreaks – not widespread disease, and a ventilation and “Vaccine-Plus” approach to the safe lifting of restrictions. They say experience from overseas shows that current vaccines alone are insufficient against the Delta COVID-19 variant. The “Plus” refers to testing, contact tracing, masks, and other non-pharmaceutical strategies, which will continue to be required in the medium term to fight Delta, and may need to be scaled up or down depending on the severity of the epidemic.
